What defines you?

"Sometimes you wake up. Sometimes the fall kills you. And sometimes, when you fall, you fly." Neil Gaiman

I was thinking the other day, as I generally do in between the talks and walks of life what defines people and how does that shape them? How does it affect their outlook on life, the plans they have, the expectations, their dreams and fears?

What is that one thing which defines us? Is it a person: a parent, a sibling, a spouse, a hero? Is it an event: the birth or death of someone, a particular achievement? It is a feeling: of fear, of love, or protection? Is this thing that defines us the same thing that holds us back or is it that which propels us forward?

Going through all these motions in life, making decisions consciously or unconsciously, time passing, meeting people and new cirumstances. Suddenly, or maybe not quite, what happens when the thing which defines us fails to be? Can one organize and re-arrange, really? Or does one simply choose a different route in spite of the gap never closing?

Hayyoush,

''What defines you" is sometimes measurable and sometimes not. Some people in life has just this one characteristic that you see and say:
Yes! Hala is all about purity. Everything she does conveys that. It's amazing how pure this woman is and how people around her are always affected by her ''super'' pure soul.
I for example is known for many things but the first thing that comes to mind when you ask people about me is "My love for the character of Superman". It probably dominates other traits which could be far much stronger or even more significant. However, this trait -for some reason- has become dominant. Other people have so much aura around them that you don't know where to look and how to define them. You look and dig deep and you find either so many things that defines them or nothing. How many times have you met someone who had no impression on you; not even the slightest one. Although this by itself is a trait i.e. it defines this person; it still is not measurable. You simply can't find anything that defines this person and give him and identity or a specific characteristic that makes him the person he is. This would lead me to think that defining a person is very much related to the culture and the surrounding. An achiever in a competitive place will shine simply because he wants to and hence he creates this thing or quality or even image that defines him. Others are just born in places that does not allow them to define themselves. I'm not sure I'm making any sense but I strongly believe that every one can "make" or "create" his own definition the way he wants to. Now if I want to be very very philosophical and take it from a religious point of view I would say that every person is born with his/her own "What defines You". I's up to the person to changes, shift, or recreate his/her own. Determination is very much key in this aspect.
